When working on handstand it's really easy to get caught up in focusing just on getting your legs up. But, every pose starts from its foundation... Your connection to the earth is key! Instead of just pushing your hands down, grip onto your mat with the tip of each finger (from the first knuckle down to the very tip), and push with the base of your palms. The centre of the palm will draw slightly away from the ground, like a suction cup drawing energy through the hands, up the arms, and all the way up the rest of the body, giving length and stability in the pose.
Your fingers and hands will also help a lot with balance. If you don't get your hips up quite high enough, push with the palm to get a little extra lift. If you get your hips a bit too far over your shoulders, pull with your fingertips... These are your breaks!
Once you are in a handstand lots of little micro adjustments can be made through little movements of the fingers to steady yourself and also give you stability to move the legs into different variations of handstand.
~ The same tips also work in other inversions, like forearm stand, as well as every arm balance!
I'm teaching an inversions workshop on October 25th so if you want to practice together in real life head over to the events page for details!
