Astavakrasana was named after the sage Astavakra. As the story goes, when Astavakra was in his mother's womb, she studied the Vedas (ancient yogic texts), and read them aloud to Astavakra. Kagola, Astavakra's father, then read the texts aloud, but made mistakes eight times. Each time, Astavakra shuddered, and when he was born his body was twisted in eight places. True story? Unlikely. Cool pose? Totally.
Yoga is an ongoing practice and poses are not goals to be conquered - they are shapes that we make while we learn to love our bodies, live in the moment, face challenges in a fun way, and release energy in places where it gets stuck.
