The workshop is always different; sometimes it's a small gathering of a few people, and a more intimate vibe, like this past one, and other times the studio is full of smiling yogis who want to share their energy. Everyone is always welcome, and one of my favourite parts of the workshop, as with every event at Ocean Sound, is watching a group of people from all parts of the world, with unique stories and histories, come together to share their energy with one another in a supportive, inclusive environment.
Alex and Anne Marie begin the workshop with a round of introductions, share some of the history of Thai Yoga massage, and then give us all basic principles and guidelines to work with when giving massage. We share metta, which means "loving kindness", with old and new friends. Once we pair up (people can either come with a partner, or meet one at the workshop), we take turns giving and receiving a 60 minute massage while Anne Marie and Alex demonstrate and guide us through. We're also encouraged to use our own intuition to guide our movements, just like in our personal asana practice. By the end of the workshop, everyone feels relaxed, our hard working bodies are rejuvenated, and we are totally blissed out.
Massage is a lot like yoga asana; it is a way of encouraging energy to flow, and releases blockages in our energetic pathways that can lead to physical and emotional discomfort, tension, and stress. When we add in the art of touch that happens when we massage one another, we also reach another level of comfort and healing energy. Our bodies work so hard, on and off the mat, as we travel through time and space; they deserve some attention and nourishment! This workshop is a great way to learn some simple moves that you can also continue to share with friends and loved ones in the future.
I feel so lucky to have a studio where I not only get to share my practice, but learn so much myself! Anne Marie and Alex offer this workshop on a monthly basis, so check our events schedule to find out when the next one is! In the meantime, take a look at the photo gallery below to see some of the moves you will learn when you join us in paradise!
